Frequently Asked Questions: Somatic Experiencing® Therapy

Compassionate, Body-Based Support for Trauma, Stress, and Nervous System Healing

What is Somatic Experiencing® (SE)?

Somatic Experiencing® is a gentle, body-focused approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE helps you reconnect with your body’s natural ability to regulate, release tension, and restore balance—without needing to relive past events.

How is SE different from traditional talk therapy?

While talk therapy emphasizes thoughts and memories, SE focuses on the language of the body—sensations, emotions, and subtle nervous system responses. This approach helps resolve the physiological effects of trauma that talking alone may not address.

What kinds of issues can SE help with?

Somatic Experiencing® can support healing for a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Trauma (both recent and developmental)
  • PTSD and complex trauma
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Chronic stress or burnout
  • Grief and loss
  • Chronic pain or tension
  • Dissociation or feeling “disconnected”

What happens in a typical session?

Sessions are collaborative, calm, and tailored to your needs. You’ll be gently guided to tune into your body’s signals—such as sensations, temperature shifts, or muscle tension—and explore what arises at a pace that feels safe. Movement or imagery may also be used. There’s no pressure to share your full story.

Do I have to talk about my experiences in detail?

Not at all. SE intentionally avoids overwhelming you with painful memories. Instead, the process helps you work with what’s happening in the moment, using awareness and curiosity to release held stress from the body often without needing to revisit the event directly.

Is SE safe for everyone?

Yes. SE is designed to be a gentle and safe process, especially for people who feel overwhelmed or “stuck.” Your therapist will work closely with you to make sure each step is grounded and supportive, so you never feel pushed or out of control.

How many sessions will I need?

Every healing journey is unique. Some clients notice changes after a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. You and your therapist will co-create a rhythm that feels right for your goals, your body, and your pace.

Who developed Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing® was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, a pioneer in trauma healing and author of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma. His work is based on more than 40 years of research into stress, biology, and how animals naturally recover from life-threatening experiences.

How do I know if SE is right for me?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, or carrying the effects of past experiences in your body, SE may offer a compassionate path forward. The best way to find out is to try a session and see how your body responds—you’ll always be in control of your process.

Do you offer Online Sessions?

Yes, with the benefits of modern technology I am able to offer my one to one sessions online via Zoom.

Accessibility

I’m afraid I do not have wheelchair access for sessions in my studio and there are a number of steps leading up to my property. However I can arrange to hold sessions at an alternative studio with good access, but this would incur a slightly higher session fee, please ask for further details. I am completely committed to making my work as accessible as possible.

Session Fees

Sessions last approx 60/70 minutes and can be in person or online via zoom

Individual sessions are £70 with some concessions available – please enquire for more details.

Longer sessions can be arranged and sometimes advised for particular types of bodywork.

Course fees and workshop prices will be displayed of my website when available.
